Papel da suplementação com probióticos no desenvolvimento e evolução da doença de Alzheimer e doença de Parkinson: uma revisão narrativa

Resumo

Com o envelhecimento da população mundial, as enfermidades neurodegenerativas têm se tornado cada vez mais prevalentes. Isso afeta a qualidade de vida dos idosos e acarreta altos custos no cuidado desses pacientes e também consequências emocionais adversas para suas famílias. Por outro lado, a microbiota intestinal surge como um crescente campo de pesquisa, a ponto de ser considerada como um novo órgão, com papel determinante no processo saúde-doença do indivíduo. Estudos recentes caracterizaram um possível papel importante da microbiota na patogênese da doença de Alzheimer e Parkinson. Isso tem gerado um novo campo de interesse, referindo-se a como as mudanças na microbiota por meio da suplementação de probióticos poderiam influenciar a evolução de sintomas como o declínio cognitivo na doença de Alzheimer e melhora dos sintomas motores e não motores na doença de Parkinson. Nesse sentido, algumas investigações encontraram resultados animadores tanto no desempenho cognitivo e no perfil metabólico em pacientes com doença de Alzheimer, quanto na melhora na escala Unified Parkinson´s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) e constipação em pacientes com doença de Parkinson. Isto levanta a necessidade de desenhar estudos futuros que permitam estabelecer os alcances reais desta nova terapêutica. Se for comprovada a sua utilidade como tratamento adjuvante, poderia potencialmente modificar a progressão dos sintomas e melhorar a qualidade de vida dos pacientes com este tipo de doenças catastróficas.
