Plants for your kidneys: A narrative review on plant-based diet and chronic kidney disease

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a prevalent condition that affects millions of people worldwide. Conventional treatments often do not provide full renal recovery, which leads to a growing interest in alternative dietary interventions. Plant-based diets have gained attention due to their potential to alleviate the complications related to this pathology and promote overall health. This article examines the literature on plant-based diets in the management of CKD on conservative treatment, highlighting its potential benefits in controlling arterial blood pressure, reducing inflammation, mitigating oxidative stress, and improving lipid profile. It also discusses the challenges and considerations associated with adopting these types of diets, including potential nutrient deficiencies and medication adjustments. The article emphasizes the importance of individualized dietary approaches, considering factors such as CKD stage, comorbidities, and nutritional requirements. It also highlights the role of professional nutritionists in educating and guiding these patients towards appropriate plant-based dietary patterns. Further research is needed to elucidate the optimal composition and feasibility of plant-based diets in the treatment of individuals suffering from CKD in conservative management.
