Introduction: Sarcopenia is a clinical condition characterized by a reduction in muscle mass. The diagnosis of sarcopenia at an early age is associated with an increased risk of suffering metabolic diseases from childhood onwards, with a negative impact on adult life. However, the study of this pathology in the pediatric population is still limited. This narrative review aims to analyze and describe the information available about sarcopenia in pediatrics and the disease conditions with which it is most frequently associated.
Methods: A review of the literature was conducted in the Embase, PubMed, Google Scholar and Science databases. Each review author searched one of the databases using the keywords Sarcopenia, pediatric population and the search algorithm: “Sarcopenia” AND “pediatric” NOT “adults”. A voting was carried out with the authors, and the articles that obtained the highest score were included.
Results: Research indicates that the presence of sarcopenia and conditions such as chronic liver disease, obesity, oncologic conditions, and inflammatory bowel disease may be associated with worse outcomes, such as increased mortality, therapeutic failure, increased risk of surgical intervention, longer recovery times, and increased risk of unfavorable complications. Further investigation of sarcopenia in the pediatric population is needed.
Conclusion: The findings of the review point to the need of establishing a specific definition and evaluation of sarcopenia in children.
